Bugbear Number 1 - Spitting

Yes, let's start with spitting. Why on earth do people (mainly young) spit in public? And why do they spit just wherever they feel like it? They seem to do it as a part of 'street culture' or style, with many just standing feet apart gobbing spit on the pavement at will, in groups.

Have these people got nothing else to do, are their lives so boring and lacking in interest that they do this activity for pleasure? More importantly have they no manners or respect for other whio see them do it, or who have walk aound it?

Ask them why they spit and most will say either:

• Because I had something in my mouth I wanted to get rid of (usually a lie)
• Because I felt like it
• Dunno, what's it got do with you anyway?

The truth is that most of them spit out of habit rather than need. They believe it's a cool thing to do, especially in groups. At last they have found something in life that they can do.

From time to time most people feel the need to spit, yes even me. But what I do is to find somewhere discrete and do it there, out of sight. But there again, I was brought up in a different age - what do I know?
